Frieden Colony Massacre

Frieden was a semi-autonomous Martian settlement where labor deserters, religious dissidents, and cooperative agrarians could build a materially viable life outside corporate debt rule and militarized command. In 2580, Zhestokost destroyed it in the Frieden Colony Massacre.
The settlement stood close to key Martian corridors. Its survival challenged Zhestokost’s claim that military command was necessary to keep people supplied and settlements functioning: Frieden offered a working alternative nearby. The regime would not tolerate that example.
Zhestokost described the assault as a preemptive anti-insurgency operation. Later evidence suggested that its main purpose was to demonstrate that no viable alternative to its rule would be allowed to survive within artillery reach of the Martian core.
In later centuries, anti-corporate and sentience-rights movements remembered Frieden as both a massacre to mourn and a warning about the force an alternative society could face simply by proving it could sustain its people.
