House Valence
House Valence is a sovereign Eidolon market, host-integration power, and patronage court. It matches unique Aetheric Resonance Interfaces to clients whose problems are valuable enough to justify an irreplaceable mind: navies, oracular combines, intelligence services, drive houses, courts, infrastructure authorities, and private fortunes large enough to govern the places around them.
Valence did not invent the Eidolon. Independent imprintists, specialist foundries, Esper estates, military laboratories, mortuary sects, illicit clinics, and patrons had produced singular high-grade ARIs for generations before the House became dominant. The older trade was intimate, inconsistent, technically inventive, and saturated with disputed custody. One workshop might follow an Esper’s posthumous commission; another might purchase a prison transfer through three brokers and call the final signature consent.
The House entered this ecology as financier, certifier, broker, and insurer. It did not need to disprove the older makers. It made their work difficult to sell without passing through Valence.
The Eidolon Register
The Valence Eidolon Register records each recognized instrument’s name, host lineage, operating history, characteristic pattern, authorized repairs, transfers, claims, and known disturbances. Registration does not establish whether an Eidolon is the continuing source person. It establishes whether participating insurers, ports, courts, militaries, and buyers will treat the instrument as the same valuable article across service and host changes.
This distinction carries the House’s authority. An independent shop may repair an Eidolon successfully while leaving it commercially stranded if Valence refuses to recognize the work. A navy may retain a functioning oracle yet lose insurance, compatible host access, resale, and accepted testimony because the Register marks its continuity as broken. Valence does not own every Eidolon. It owns the most widely accepted answer to whether an Eidolon remains itself.
Independent registers and direct patronage survive outside this system. Some predate Valence and preserve better records of source consent or workshop custody. Others exist to launder stolen products. The House describes them together as fragmented provenance risk, allowing careful rivals and obvious criminals to justify the same demand for Valence certification.
The most prestigious refusal comes from Wavecrafter lineages whose practitioners voluntarily bind themselves into prepared instruments at death. The resulting union is a Sacred Instrument because an Eidolon now inhabits it, not because the mechanism was holy property in advance. Valence classifies Sacred Instruments as unregistered Eidolons and offers extraordinary valuations, host-continuity services, and recognition across client jurisdictions. The lineages reject the market’s authority to perform that recognition. In their account, a person has continued within the community that prepared their new body and requires neither an auction identity nor an external registry to remain who they are.
Protective registration carries an unspoken alternative. A publicly recognized Master is too politically expensive to seize, so Valence offers ceremony, safe transit, and terms generous enough to establish jurisdiction by consent. An isolated Sacred Instrument with no witnesses, accepted registry identity, or immediate sect protection presents a different opportunity. Valence security can remove the instrument, suppress its prior provenance, and later return some or all of its capability to the market under another name. The House prefers willing dependency because it is cleaner and more durable. It does not confuse that preference with restraint when disappearance is deniable.
Curation
Valence sells finished Eidolons and long-term placement, not anonymous resonant brains. Its curators study source histories, surviving cognitive traits, host geometry, operating environments, client doctrine, and likely pattern disturbances. Their prestige comes from selecting a mind whose particular habits will become capability inside a particular synthetic body.
An astronomer may become a navigator. A jurist may be installed as an adjudication instrument. A suspicious intelligence analyst may become a counterintrusion system whose refusal to trust supplied context is priced as resilience. The fit can be technically brilliant while remaining an act of industrial custody imposed after the source can no longer negotiate it.
Every Eidolon receives a name, demonstration, host specification, service covenant, and controlled account of provenance beginning at imprinting. Private viewings resemble the examination of rare instruments or artworks: silent rooms, museum lighting, black glass, pale metals, sealed records, and an attending curator able to translate distress into performance language without visibly changing expression.
The House’s doctrine is concise: an Eidolon is not the source continued, but the source’s resonant form made operational. Valence therefore celebrates individuality while denying the individual. It recognizes each victim closely enough to price them correctly.
Sovereignty by Dependency
Valence’s market dominance is public and impossible to disguise. Its Eidolons serve in flagships, prediction courts, strategic infrastructure, and systems whose operators have built doctrine around one irreplaceable mind. Elysian politics rewards that dependency with jurisdiction.
The House holds sovereign production enclaves around selected host foundries, imprinting facilities, service clinics, archives, and auction courts. Clients grant protected transit, inspection exemptions, private provenance arbitration, and legal treatment of Eidolons as proprietary instruments. These concessions are framed as necessary precautions around dangerous anomalous technology and singular trade secrets.
The arrangement is reciprocal. A government protects Valence because its fleet or court depends on Valence support. The House places future commissions where they will deepen that protection. A patron denied the next suitable Eidolon may lose a strategic capability to a rival; access therefore buys silence, favorable law, territory, and military guarantees without requiring Valence to govern a broad population directly.
Valence sovereignty shields the process that sustains Valence sovereignty. Its enclaves decide which inspectors may examine source custody. Its courts define acceptable provenance. Its clients defend those boundaries because reopening them could invalidate the instruments on which they already depend.
The Cuckoo House
Older makers call Valence the Cuckoo House. It settled inside a living cottage industry, adopted its language and craft, then used finance, registration, insurance, host access, and sovereign privilege to push the original workshops toward the margins. The insult is accurate without making the displaced trade innocent. Independent Eidolon production carried its own coercion, vanity commissions, kidnappings, custody fraud, and convenient theories of posthumous consent.
Valence made that violence legible enough to insure. Standard contracts, registered host lineages, recognized service intervals, and controlled auctions reduced risk for buyers while moving scrutiny away from source acquisition. A product can possess flawless Valence provenance from the moment of imprinting onward and no admissible record of who authorized the brain’s destruction.
The Register also makes erasure administratively useful. If Valence never recognized a wandering Sacred Instrument, participating offices possess no Valence identity to mark as missing. A later Eidolon can begin with clean provenance at inspection even when its host, cultivated pattern, or captive inhabitant entered House custody on an unrecorded road.
The House depends upon labor it presents as refinement. Curators, resonance diagnosticians, host fitters, imprinting crews, provenance clerks, handlers, security staff, auction specialists, and service technicians keep each singular instrument operational and commercially coherent. Senior curators become public figures and political brokers. Workers closest to failed imprints, distressed Eidolons, damaged hosts, and biological intake carry knowledge the House classifies as compartmentalized safety material.
The Hidden Reserve
Valence’s current dominance exceeds what registration and patronage alone can explain. The House secretly possesses the Megiddo Vault lost during the Long Silence. Its mortuary core contains generations of intact brains from a population whose shared disciplines generalized mature aetheric resonance far beyond ordinary rates.
Valence does not flood the market. It selects sources, commissions hosts, and releases new Eidolons slowly enough to preserve the scarcity on which its sovereignty rests. The reserve lets the House promise future supply where every rival must hunt, bargain with, abduct, or await the death of another exceptional Esper. A century of curated demand can be met without exhausting the Vault quickly enough for outsiders to measure its limits.
The pattern is visible without explaining itself. The first Vault-derived Eidolons woke confused and carried recognizable fragments of Megiddo language, doctrine, and mortuary life. Valence adapted its hosts, orientation protocols, and handlers until later products entered service without the same obvious dislocation. Competitors can still infer a hidden mature source population from their related resonance, but buyers accept Valence’s explanation of proprietary conditioning because the products work.
The lineage retains one celebrated and indispensable peculiarity. Its Eidolons return with exceptional fidelity to the stars as they appeared from Earth. Megiddo taught those constellations to every child as a visual mantra separating the lost creation from the Elysian sky. That maintained symbolic contradiction is what cultivated the population’s resonance: the Aether answers minds trained to hold an absent creation as more authoritative than the world immediately perceived.
Valence can soften disorientation, adapt hosts, and teach an Eidolon to operate inside Elysian coordinates. It cannot condition away the Earth stars without degrading the source of the instrument’s power. The House markets the surviving relation as deep-reference stability, valuable in navigators, astrometric instruments, anomaly detectors, oracles, and systems required to act across incompatible frames. Only Megiddo’s highest priesthood and investigators able to connect the early product pattern to its academic phase change understand why the same stars power every instrument in the lineage.
The House’s greatest asset is therefore also a strategic extinction event waiting to become public. If the source of the reserve were proved, Valence clients would have to choose between surrendering singular systems, defending the institution that supplied them, or admitting that their sovereign order rests upon title issued after murder.
