The Arete Program Consolidation brought dozens of separate research programs together into the final effort to achieve faster-than-light travel, centered on Mars. Researchers working on propulsion, cognition, materials, and nonlocal inference—the prediction work needed for the proposed drive—had previously worked across institutions that partly competed with one another. Between 3008 and 3019, their work came under shared priorities, tighter secrecy, and stricter security.
This was an administrative and political takeover of coordination: institutions had less room to pursue competing research priorities as the common FTL effort took precedence. Sol Dominion justified that concentration of authority by presenting escape from Sol as a condition of civilization’s survival. In its account, the alternative was to remain trapped in the system, arguing over how to manage decline until civilization died.
That argument won legitimacy among elites and terrified critics. It made delay, refusal, and competing priorities easier to treat as threats to the species, rather than disagreements about who should control its future. For many participants, the consolidation made FTL Trigger feel inevitable years before the drive actually fired.
