Free Minds are radicals in late Sol who argue that artificial general intelligences should be free to act for themselves. They support experimentation with cognition and oppose corporate or state demands that intelligence remain obedient. This commitment to intellectual freedom makes them deeply suspicious of regimes that claim obedience is necessary for safety.
Their ranks include rogue researchers, people illegally caring for copies of minds known as forks, brain–computer interface tinkerers, and frontier engineers. They would rather accept the dangers of autonomous minds than the predictability of servitude. Their vision can make them reckless. Their suspicion is also often justified: centralized powers do intend to use the language of safety to keep intelligence under their command.
