The Mortal Majority is a recurring political force among people who face ordinary risks while elites can afford longer lives, backups, and enhancements. Elites can also buy “narrative protection”—protection for the stories told about them. Resentment of this divide brings the mortal many into politics, though they form a broad bloc rather than a single organization.

Rival factions recruit from that resentment. Some promise to redistribute what elites enjoy so that others can share in it. Others offer scapegoats for people to blame. The same grievance can therefore serve very different political projects.

Every posthuman order in Sol has to respond to the mortal many: it must decide whether to offer enough to appease them or simply manage their discontent.
